We are a group of researchers specialized in cardiovascular medicine, and in particular in atrial fibrillation ( which is a heart condition associated with increased risk of heart failure, stroke, and mortality.

We are planning a new clinical trial in elderly overweight/obese patients with atrial fibrillation, to test the efficacy of a low-calorie-diet leading to weight loss and consequently, to improvement in atrial fibrillation, health status, and quality-of-life.

We think it would be valuable to have a focus group with the involvement of patients and their care-givers early in the study design, before finalising it and seeking the opinion of an ethics panel.

Our idea would be to involve participants (1) reviewing with them the proposed study design from the prospective of patients/public, (2) involving them in prioritising some of our research questions, (2) involving them in preparing the application for possible grants, (3) planning to involve them afterwards.
